Ethan Marcotte

Most of us are fans of Ethan for his work – be that his books (especially the famous Responsive Web Design which is now free to read online), his talks (especially this one: The Word-Wide Work) and his design work. His design is always very beautiful and this redesign of his own site is no different ツ The screenshots in this post were taken on 6th March 2025, following his blog post.
Just take a look at the site and its wonderful use of colour (check out the You Deserve a Tech Union book page in particular), composition with angular lines and shapes as well as the simply delightful typesetting and layout. If you are looking for an examplar of personal site which also acts as portfolio – this is one you should definitely take a proper look at ツ

One aspect I find particularly nice is the site menu and the subtle changes to the little header feature when the window is resized. Try it and keep an eye on the top right ~ it’s just beautiful ツ
This site menu is both clear and elegant as well as nicely accessible. Combining the words with the icon – and leading the eye to it with the angled line – just a very nicely considered and designed menu. I know I will pointing to this for a perfect example of an effective site navigation.
Lastly, I have to include a screenshot of this lovely feature footer to end the page ツ Of course, I particularly love the little message to send AI bots packing!
